Most of the major religions of the world have a teaching tradition of sacred sex that brings sexual energy home to God, to the Spirit, to the flow of Life in innocent purity, sacred celebration, and joy. Most major religions teach a way to embrace the body and its powerful sexual instincts and gifts as a means to union with the highest realms of Divine wholeness and beauty. A Christianity of asceticism in the west developed a strong dualistic repression of the body’s sensual nature. This was especially true of the body’s sexual energies and thus inevitably led to a religious repression of women and Creation itself. This repression was tragic in its effects, blocking the incarnational emphasis of Jesus’ teachings, for it is pure, natural sexual energy that links mankind to all that is feminine and earthy in order to birth new life. We still suffer greatly from our ingrained social tradition of replacing the nurturing, birthing aspect of women and Creation with competitive, aggressive, warring economic and political structures.
The pure instincts of sexual energy, freed of all twisted projections we have made upon it, mirror the deeper instincts of the Spirit to unite with the great otherness of God in an ecstasy and joy that dissolves our wounded sense of separation. There is a sacred resonance of nature and design between the sexual instincts of the body and the opening spirit. It is in this deeper harmony of our physical and spiritual being that the body at last becomes a friend, a wise teacher and temple of innocent joy. How else shall we become whole people, uniting the freedom of the Spirit with Creation in a nurturing, creative way, except we discover the primal innocence of Spirit and body in a way that our soul finally gets it, is purified of false beliefs with their supporting systems of emotions and habits, and comes all the way home.
